Original Air Date: January 6, 2018 King of the Whopper - Episode 18 ![]()
In this episode Beth and Kelly introduce a song of the episode - and a bonus book recommendation from Kelly! So, if we only tell you sad depressing things today, and you need a moment to process, grab your headphones and take a listen -
REM's"It the End of the World" Or, pick up a great book and read some actual fiction. Celeste Ng's "Little Fires Everywhere" ![]()
Now - onto the fake news. We start with an article from Coda and discuss how should journalists report on actual lies. Should they report them word for word just because they come from the mouth of a government spokesperson? Apparently - Russians and Americans are both dealing with a similar issue.
Russia is also mad at Buzzfeed (over the dossier), and they think our congress is united against Russia. We know, we couldn't stop laughing either. No, not those whoppers...
The Article: The Whoppers of 2017 President Trump monopolizes our list of the year’s worst falsehoods and bogus claims. Link: www.factcheck.org/2017/12/the-whoppers-of-2017/ Apparently a notable fact checking site has found that our esteemed president has told a *few* lies this last year. So much so that they have dubbed him the "King of Whoppers". Eeesh. What will Ronald McDonald have to say about that? So - what happens when the President of the United States tells lot of verified lies? It may be too early to know the lasting effects, but in the short term - we see a lot of fake news about the things he talks about. For example.... The Article: PISSED OFF YET? Syrian Man With Four Wives And 22 Kids Gets $ 360,000 A Year In Welfare Link: (I am not hyperlinking this. Going to this site should require more work on your part. If fact - going forward all fake articles will not be hyperlinked.) http://apachenativeamericans.us/pissed-off-yet-syrian-man-with-four-wives-and-22-kids-gets-360000-a-year-in-welfare.html Outcome: Mostly Fake News by a likely Russian Troll Resources: https://www.snopes.com/muslim-migrant-benefits/
And then... because what episode about 'what lies should journalists report on' be complete without talking about Megyn Kelly interviewing Alex Jones. Warning - we say some mean stuff about Fox news. Sorry... not sorry. The Article: Megyn Kelly, NBC Under Fire Over ‘Sickening’ Alex Jones Interview Link: https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/megyn-kelly-alex-jones_us_593e4421e4b0c5a35ca0dd46 ![]()
Warning ***Satire Caption***
"Megyn - I'm serious, the fish was this big." "How dumb are you? That's not even a big fish." "You hate fisherman." "That's a crazy response. What is wrong with you?" "You know what's crazy! The sale my site is having on supplements right now! For only $39.99 a month...." "Just stop." ![]()
Beth and Kelly round out the episode with a Snopes review of a statement about the income of firefighters and police.
The Article: Did Donald Trump Say 'Police Officers and Firefighters Make Too Much Money'? Link: https://www.snopes.com/police-officers-firefighters-too-much-money/ Outcome: Nope. He didn't say it. And remember - there are PLENTY of things that DJT *does* say - on a fairly regular basis - that demand your outrage. Save it for the real stuff - like the tax bill that this misleading statement was about.
