Facts Don't Kill People, Myths Kill People

3/3/2018

In this episode, Beth and Kelly talk about guns and the myths that surround them. February 14th, 2018 America experienced another mass shooting in a school - but this time the reaction has been different. We've watched as survivors have stepped into the role of policy changers - and we're here for all of that! Are bots creating fake stories about these kids? You bet! Are the usual suspects (The Federalist, Gateway Pundit, Hannity, etc) regurgitating misinformation instead of doing real investigative work? Do you even have to ask?

We broke the episode up in two parts, because there is just so much going on; but you definitely want to stay tuned for the second part (coming soon!). Kelly busts her least favorite myths surrounding guns and regulations, and in the first part Beth takes aim at the Dickey Amendment, assault weapons, and how fake news blames liberals once again.

Beth starts our myth busting with an article from Scientific American revealing studies that show having more guns does not make you safer.  Obviously, that liberal rag can't be trusted, so she checked The Federalist, just to make sure. We're being sarcastic here, but, unfortunately, the author isn't. Please check out his highly acclaimed literary masterpiece below:

Part Two Update:

And, we're back! In the second part of our very long talk about guns, Kelly and Beth discuss Kelly's List o' Gun Myths that perpetuate in every social media post after the newest shooting.  They take on good guys with guns, mental health and even talk about the NRA's first female president and fellow Floridian, Marion Hammer!

Beth's "Jam" of the Week, Zombie by The Cranberries

"Zombie" is a protest song written by Dolores O'Riordan of the Irish rock band The Cranberries, about the 1993 IRA bombing in Warrington, and in memory of two young victims, Johnathan Ball and Tim Parry. The song reached No. 1 on the charts in Australia, Belgium, France, Denmark and Germany.
It won the "Best Song" award at the 1995 MTV Europe Music Awards.

Kelly's "Jam" of the Week, We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver

Eva never really wanted to be a mother - and certainly not the mother of the unlovable boy who murdered seven of his fellow high school students, a cafeteria worker, and a much-adored teacher who tried to befriend him, all two days before his sixteenth birthday. Now, two years later, it is time for her to come to terms with marriage, career, family, parenthood, and Kevin's horrific rampage in a series of startlingly direct correspondences with her estranged husband, Franklin. Uneasy with the sacrifices and social demotion of motherhood from the start, Eva fears that her alarming dislike for her own son may be responsible for driving him so nihilistically off the rails.

We jest, we rant, we use A LOT of curse words, and we do it all for you! See you soon  - and always remember: Spread jam, not lies.
