It's Just a Social Construct - with Nick Byrd
In this episode we welcome "first friend" of the pod Nick Bryd to talk with us and guest host with us through the fake news of the academia world.
Nick is a PhD candidate at Florida State University where he studies reasoning and he studies all different aspects of reasoning - including how it applies to fake news. He especially looks at "reflective" vs "unreflective" reasoning.
Also Nick is extremely good at blogging - and you can check you his blog about the episode here:
Is it too self congratulatory to say what an amazing blog post that is? Well - it is an amazing blog. So, check it out, and the rest of his blog at:
We were curious about fake news in academia, since we were having Nick on, we found this great article to kick off the discussion:
From here we discuss open access journals, and what that means. We also talk about how the pay to publish model has become predatory.
Then, onto the fake news. And a fake study that was published as a hoax titled "The Conceptual Penis as a Social Construct".
The article: Fake academic paper published in liberal journal hilariously exposes the absurdity of gender studies
We also discuss a Snopes go fund me campaign. One of the best resources for debunking fake news, myths, email chains- etc... is in a legal battle. The campaign is real. Literally all our fingers and toes are crossed that it works out and Snopes continues.
Here is the link:
And - lastly, here is a link to the YouTube video for the King Missile song "Detachable Penis". Because it's really hard to talk about a conceptual penis without breaking into song. Who knew?
