This week Beth and Kelly have guests! Dave and Erin Ninehouser from Hear Yourself Think join us to discuss how they started and how to bring reason back to the table. Beth originally heard about this great organization during our prep for our last episode, where we reviewed the documentary "The Brainwashing of my Dad" and Dave and Erin graciously agreed to join us.
Hear Yourself Think was founded after the Ninehousers were concerned about how much right-wing fear-mongering was influencing politics. Their hope was to keep rational ideas in the forefront and remain open to new ideas, so when you engage with someone who doesn't agree with your position you can do so in a manner that doesn't escalate the divide that currently exists. The idea is to literally give people the chance to hear themselves think about the topic, instead of passively consuming whatever is shown on Fox, Rush Limbaugh, Drudge Report, etc.
One of the ways Hear Yourself Think is attempting to help people is through a workshop: “Making Reason the Loudest Voice in the Room: Communication Training for a Propaganda Era,” educates and equips citizens to have effective conversations that cut through misinformation and conspiracy, create moments of insight around media influence, cultivate self-reflection and rebuild the civic connections that are necessary for democracy to flourish. Some key points to remember about making your argument are:
1. Tell your story - People remember how you make them feel.
2. Find a Yes statement the other person can agree with - Creating commonality is key to erasing that us vs. them divide that is easily fallen into.
